The closest access point to this particular crossing is from a trailhead at Rt 346 in Pennsylvania, at N 41° 59.121 W 078° 54.124, 1.1 miles away. The next closest access point from New York State is Wolf Run Rd 3.1 miles from the border, according to trail maps, but they also indicate that this road is "impassible to vehicles". The closest servicable road on the New York side is 7.5 miles away at Coon Run Road, N 42° 00.151 W 078° 49.102, but those of us who hiked through started from Allegany State Park Rt 3 (ASP 3), access point 4, N 42° 00.310 W 078° 47.628 for a total hike distance of 10.4 miles (to Rt 346 in PA).
The trail south of the border (PA) passes through Allegany National Forest. The trail north of the border (NY) passes through Allegany State Park. The whole of the trail is certified as part of the North Country National Scenic Trail. From the border northward, the trail is both Finger Lakes Trail and Conservation Trail through the whole of Allegany State Park (ASP) and beyond. Not far north of Allegany State Park (N 42° 21.127 W 078° 35.905), these two trails split. The Conservation Trail extends north to the Rainbow bridge at the border of the US and Canada. The total length of the Conservation Trail is 177 miles. The Finger Lakes Trail turns east, ending in the Catskill Mountains, in Ulster County, NY more than 500 miles away.
