Brigadier General Carroll E. "Hap" Adams, Jr. (1923 - 1970) graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1945. As a member of the Corp of Engineers, he served in Hawaii, Europe, the United States and the Canadian Arctic.
He volunteered for service in Vietnam in 1970, and assumed command of the 937th Engineer Group. On May 12th, 1970, General Adams was killed while conducting an inspection tour when his helicopter was shot down by fire from a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft machine gun.
In 1971, the intersection of East Oxbow Road and the Mohawk Trail in Charlemont, General Adams' boyhood home, was named the General Hap Adams Intersection. A memorial at General Hap Adams Intersection is inscribed:
