"In the mid 1800s, the Pacific Garden Mall was simply know as the Pacific. The corner now occupied by the Old Theater Building contained a picturesque little pond by a mammoth sycamore. Also under the tree was a huge cider press. Pioneers would pick apples in a nearby orchard and press a supply of cider before heading on.

Created by the designers of the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, the New Santa Cruz Theater opened its doors on February 12, 1920 with a rousing Mack Sennett comedy. Except for a major facelift in 1938, the New Santa Cruz Theater continued showing films until the evening of December 22, 1955 when the raging San Lorenzo River left its banks and engulfed the lobby. In 1976, demolition began to rebuilt the Old Theater Building of today."
