Will Rogers Park was developed in the 1930s as a joint effort of the Oklahoma City Parks Department and the National Parks Service. The CCC did most of the land preparation, clearing out of trees and underbrush, pruning, building terraces, excavating for two small lakes with the building of dams on tributaries of the North Fork River, and the grading of roads, terraced gardens, and beautiful rock formations. The WPA then constructed several buildings, bridges and curbing, and an amphitheater.

This is a park originally 160 acres. The northwest portion is a Garden and Arboretum area which is on the National Register. There are entrances to the park from N.W. 36th Street and Portland Avenue. This CCC monument stands in front of the amphitheater as you enter from Portland Avenue. The monument is an eight foot granite slab. At the top is a seal showing trees and a lake, with the words "UNITED STATES CIVILIAN CONSERVATION CORPS" around the perimeter. A ribbon streetching out from the seal on both sides reads: "Spirit of the CCC / 1933 / 1942 / Alumni".

Engraved on the monument are these words:

The
Civilian Conservation Corps
and
Oklahoma City Will Rogers Park
1933 - 1942

This Park Was Created Between 1933 and 1936 by Civilian
Conservation Corps Companies 872, 875 and 895 for Future
Generations of Americans.

The CCC was Organized by the Federal Government
During the Great Depression to Provide Useful Employment
For Thousands of Citizens and to Develop and Save the
Nation's Natural Resources. Under Management of U.S.
Army Personnel, They Built Roads and Nurseries, Land-
Scaped Parks, Planted Trees, and Conserved the Countryside.
For their Work They were Paid $30 Per Month, of Which
$25 was Sent Home. They also Received Housing, Food,
Medical and Dental Care as well as Educational Benefits.

The Young Men of the CCC Labored to Beautify your
Land, and Pass it on to you. A Preservation of Natural
Resources will Remain Strong so Long as the Flame of
Freedom is Fueled by Productivity and not Extinguished
by Neglect. If you and Future Generations will Raise
Your Voices in Songs of Praise, we will be Justly Rewarded.
