The Alabama Department of Archives and History building is located across Washington Street from the side of the Alabama State Capitol Building. As one moves up the first flight of steps, there is this huge bronze map of Alabama with 85 images of cultural, historical or geographical items as well as the topographical features from Mobile Bay on the Gulf of Mexico to the mountains in the northeast corner of the state. The web page listed below has links to all 85 items, giving the history of the item. For example, number 37 is "Wright Bothers' First Flying School, 1910" which was located northwest of the city of Montgomery. The site is a waymark (WMDGZ0).

According to the Archives web page: "Gregg LeFevre and Jennifer Andrews, with the assistance of Jose Marti and Bill Muller, and Mary Walton Upchurch, Landscape Architect, Inc., developed the final presentation of the Bronze Map. Images on the Bronze Map were chosen by ADAH staff from a list of images suggested by Alabamians from across the state. The map was commissioned by an anonymous donor in memory of Isidor Weil. It was dedicated December 14, 2006."

It is difficult to get a perspective of the map without walking on it. I hope the photos will do it some justice. The following list of the images comes from the web page:
