The Ploughman was one of three statues commissioned by Edward Scripps in 1903 to depict California's developement. Originally the sculpture was on Scripps ranch and was later donated to the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. It has been at its current location in the garden of the Old Director's House since 1976.

The sculpture shows a life size man sitting on a plow with his dog at his feet. There are no plaques or signs explaining why a farming sculpture is at an oceanographic reseach facility.

The sculpture is in good shape. It is outdoors and can be visited anytime.
