Dieses Denkmal für den Dichter Friedrich Schiller steht auf dem Schillerplatz, einem der zentralen Plätze in der Mainzer Innenstadt.
Das namensgebende Schillerdenkmal wurde anläßlich des 100. Geburtstags von Friedrich Schiller im Jahr 1859 in Auftrag gegeben. Geschaffen wurde die überlebensgroße Bronzefigur des Dichters und die Bronzetafeln im Sockel von dem Darmstädter Bildhauer Johann Baptist Scholl d. J. Der Bronzeguß erfolgte bei der Firma J. D. Burgschmiet Lenz in Nürnberg. Der Sockel aus belgischem Marmor wurde von der Mainzer Firma Johann Friedrich Roßbach ausgeführt. Am 18. Oktober 1862 wurde das Denkmal am südlichen Ende des Platzes aufgestellt, 1929 wurde es zum nördlichen Ende, wo es heute noch steht versetzt.
Der Sockel des Denkmals ist ornamental geschmückt und mehrfach gegliedert. Der Dichter selbst schreitet vorwärts, ein aufgeschlagenes Buch in der Hand, eine Haltung, die den vorwärts strebenden Geist der damaligen Zeit symbolisieren sollte.

This monument to the poet Friedrich Schiller is on the Schillerplatz, one of the central squares in the centre of Mainz.
The name giving Schiller monument was ordered in 1859 to commemorate the 100th Birth of Friedrich Schiller. Created was the larger than life bronze statue of the poet and the bronze plaques on the base by the Darmstadt sculptor Johann Baptist Scholl d. J. The bronze was cast at the company J. D. Burgschmiet Lenz in Nuremberg. The base was made of Belgian marble by Johann Friedrich Rossbach from Mainz. On 18 October 1862 the monument was erected at the southern end of the square, 1929 it was moved to the northern end, where it still stands.
The base of the monument is decorated ornamental and divided several times. The poet himself strides forward, an open book in hand, an attitude which should symbolize the forward-striving spirit of this time.
