The Rochdale canal is 32 miles long and connected Manchester in Lancashire on the west side of the Pennine Hills and Sowerby Bridge in Yorkshire on the east side. It was completed in 1804 and is one of three canals that cross the Pennine hills.
The canal had largely fallen into disuse by 1937 apart from a small section at the Manchester end. However leisure boating became popular in the 1960s and after a long campaign the canal was restored and reopened by 2007.
From Sowerby Bridge the canal has used 34 locks to reach this point, and there are another 56 locks after this one to descend into Manchester.
