Overlooking the Dee estuary and housing a great collection of plants, Ness Botanic Gardens offers a tranquil place to admire the conservation efforts and horticultural of Britain. The gardens are owned by the University of Liverpool and their management of the site includes scientific research. There are many rare species and plant displays to enjoy here.

Courses, school visits, workshops and guided tours, conferences, coach parties and exhibitions are all held here at the gardens. There are also special events held throughout the year, including concerts.

With over 10,000 plant species represented here the botanic garden separates them into horticultural and academic collections.

Ness Botanic Gardens began as a garden created by the Liverpool cotton merchant, Arthur Kilpin Bulley, in 1898. Bulley was particularly interested in the plants of the Far East and sponsored expeditions by the renowned British plant collectors, George Forrest and Frank Kingdon Ward. In turn, plants from the Far East found their way to Britain and notable examples of these hundreds of species include Rhododendron griersonianum and Camelia saluenensis.

Bulley's daughter Louis gave the garden to the University of Liverpool on her father's death in 1948 with an endowment of £75,000. Today the gardens are increasingly used in research and education after a restoration programme after the World Wars to restore them to their original glory was successful.

There is a large visitor centre with a shop and restaurant and the FEPOW Bamboo Garden is inside the conservatory, free for all to visit. There is a charge for the Botanic Gardens themselves.
