The in 1497 by Emperor Maximilian I. granted imperial trade fair privilege makes Leipzig the oldest trade fair city in the world and an internationally renowned attraction for traders and visitors.
The exhibition is located in the new exhibition centre (Neues Messegelände) built 1996 about seven miles from the city centre on the northern outskirts of the district Seehausen. In 2000, the Glass Hall at the new exhibition centre was awarded the "Outstanding Structure Award" from the IABSE (International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering).
