The immense neo-Renaissance building, with its 647 rooms and imposing central clock tower, is one of a most graceful structures in the city. To most Hamburgers this large building is the symbolic heart of the town. The building was designed by a group of seven architects, led by Martin Haller. Construction started in 1886 and the new city hall was inaugurated in 1897.
The central clock tower of the Town Hall has height about 112 meters (i.e. 367 ft) and in approximately in its centre are mounted four nicely decorated dials of its Town Clock. Their hands are gilded. Gilded Latin numerals and located in black circle with red centre and around the circle there are gilded ornaments in red field.
