This theatre was built in 1845 during the reign of Queen Victoria and has a large version of her coat of arms above a statue of William Shakespeare.

This theatre was built during the reign of Queen Victoria and as it was called the Theatre Royal it is appropriate that her coat of arms should be on the building.

It is a rather grand version of the arms, and instead of being carved in relief as normal, the arms are made with 3d figures of the lion and the unicorn. They are shown in the prone position rather than standing as is the normal case.

The lion is gilded and is facing to the left.
