In Taunton, within the Miles Standish Industrial Park, is the National Weather Service (NWS) Office for Taunton. In addition to collecting data and producing weather forecasts, they maintain a weather station themselves.

To get to this location, from I-495, take the exit for Bay Street. Travel south for a short distance then take a right into the entrance for the Miles Standish Industrial Park. Follow the main road to the NWS office on your left. There is a sign at the road. On the right is the radar station (the volleyball on a tower), and a water tower.

The Taunton Office serves the Greater Boston Area. This area is notorious for extremely changeable weather due to the interaction between the marine and land weather masses. They keep watch for snow storms in the winter, severe thunderstorms in the spring and summer, and hurricanes in the late summer and fall. They provide a wide range of weather forecast information 24 hours a day for most of Massachusetts, northern Connecticut, all of Rhode Island, and a few counties in New Hampshire. They issue warning for 38 zones in Mass., Conn., and R.I.

The office has all the standard instruments (thermometer, barometer, anemometer, etc.) plus, the dopler radar station across the street. I could see some of the instruments in back of the office as I was walking up the road; however, No Trespassing signs warned not to get too close, so I don't have close photos of the area. I have pictures of the office, though.

The region that the office serves is rich in meteorological history. Early weather observations go back as far as colonial times when men like John Winthrop made observations in the 1700s at Harvard University. The longest continuous weather record is located at Blue Hill Observatory in Milton (also a weather station). MIT and Bridgewater State have programs in meteorology. And, the headquarters of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) are located in Boston.

When visiting, please call ahead to arrange a time. Group tours are available as well (again, call ahead).
