"The turtle is a symbol of longevity. Other traditional symbols are forest, rain and thunder. The artist, Elwood Martin Reynolds, is of Cheyenne/Arapaho descent. His art, in both traditional and contemporarty Native American styles, synthesizes strength and simplicity. This sculpture is a gift to De Anza College from Dr. and Mrs. Alvin B. Rutner."
