In 1935, CCC workers from the Bloody Angle camp at the Spotsylvania Court House Battlefield reconstructed two sections of Civil War trenches and earthworks to add to the visual experience of visitors. Careful research and analysis was done to duplicate the exact location and appearance. A 100' section was rebuilt behind Bloody Angle with vertical and horizontal logs along an existing trench from the Civil War.¹

Unfortunately, reconstructions, like the original trenches, will deteriorate from time and the elements. In 1978 the Bloody Angle earthworks were refurbished, but over 30 years later the structure is not as pristine and the path to them is not as clearly defined.² However, the trench is not only a piece of history from the Civil War, but a legacy of the CCC as well.
