Art Rooney's great-grandparents, James and Mary Rooney, were Irish Catholics who immigrated from Newry in County Down, Ireland to Canada during the Irish potato famine in the 1840s.
In 1933, he purchased the franchise rights to found a football club in Pittsburgh for $2500. Originally named the Pirates, the team name was later changed to the Steelers. The Steelers won four world championships during his lifetime.
He was named to the Football Hall of Fame in 1964.
