This marker dedicated to the 82nd Indiana Infantry Regiment is on a wooded path, on the west side of Layfette Rd, between Poe Rd. and Dyer Rd. in the Chickamauga NB. It Marks regiment's position east of the Dyer House site on Sunday 9/20/1863.

This marker made of limestone is dedicated to 82nd Regiment Indiana Infantry and is in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The unit was organized at Indianapolis, Indiana and mustered in September 8, 1862. This is the one of three marker to 82nd Indiana Infantry on the battlefield. It marks their location on Sunday, September 20th, 1863 from 9:30 A.M. until 11:30 A.M.

Short Significance Description:

Monument contributes to nat'l significance of the park under NR Criterion A because it represents the national movement among veterans to commemorate Civil War battlefields. This was the first U.S. national military park.

Short Physical Description

This standard Indiana regimental marker consists of a 4' x 4' x 4'8" high rock-faced oolitic stone block with a peaked top and a 12" x 18" bronze plaque affixed to its front. Marks regiment's position east of the Dyer House site.
