DESCRIBED BY NORTH CAROLINA GEODETIC SURVEY 1975 THE STATION IS A N. C. GEODETIC SURVEY TRAVERSE STATION LOCATED ON SUMMIT OF HUMP MOUNTAIN APPROXIMATELY 2.2 MILES SOUTHWEST OF ELK PARK AND 3.1 MILES NORTH-NORTHWEST OF MINNEAPOLIS, NORTH CAROLINA. TO REACH STATION FROM INTERSECTION OF US 19E AND SR 1166 AT BRIDGE OVER HORSE CREEK IN MINNEAPOLIS, PROCEED NORTHWESTERLY ALONG SR 1166 FOR 1.8 MILES TO GATE AND JEEP TRAIL ON RIGHT (APPROXIMATELY 150 FEET EAST OF SR 1166 BRIDGE OVER HORSE CREEK), THENCE ALONG JEEP TRAIL NORTHERLY IN PASTURE FOR 1.1 MILES TO TOP OF HOUSTON RIDGE, THENCE NORTHWESTERLY ALONG JEEP TRAIL ON RIDGE AND THROUGH GATE, THENCE NORTH-NORTHEAST FOR 0.35 MILE TO CROSSNG OF LITTLE HORSE CREEK, THENCE NORTHWESTERLY ALONG TRAIL FOR 0.7 MILE TO T INTERSECTION ON RIDGE OF HUMP MOUNTAIN, THENCE NORTHWESTERLY ALONG RIDGE FOR 0.25 MILE TO SUMMIT OF HUMP MOUNTAIN AND STATION ON RIGHT SIDE OF JEEP TRAIL AND IN SOUTHEAST SECTION OF FLAT SUMMIT, APPROXIMATELY 12 FEET SOUTHEAST OF POINT ALONG JEEP TRAIL BETWEEN PLATEAU AND SLOPE. STATION MARK IS A STANDARD BRASS DISK, STAMPED---HUMP 1975---, SET IN THE TOP OF A CONCRETE CYLINDER, THE TOP OF WHICH IS 1 INCH BELOW THE GROUND SURFACE. MARK IS 8.0 FEET EAST-NORTHEAST OF THE CENTERLINE OF JEEP TRAIL.
The benchmark is roughly 13-15 ft from the summit of Hump Mountain which is a bald, thus open grassland (being maintained by mowing). The 360 degree views from the summit are awesome.
Access route described in the NC description is through private land. Many people pass this benchmark - as hikers on the 2200+ mile Appalachian Trail. Reached by hiking the AT 5.4 miles from US-19E, while also involved about 2600 ft elevation climb - four hours including lunch. Return trip was a speedy two hours.
