Great Allegheny Passage - Markleton Trailhead - Markleton, Pennsylvania



Markleton was the start of the Allegheny Highlands Trail when it was started from here in 1994. The section towards the Pinkerton Horn was completed from here in 1999. Markleton is a small village with only 14 houses (not counting the Post Office. Amenities at Markleton include a changing house, river access, chemical toilet, picnic tables and parking. Markleton was named for and by the sons of General Joseph Markle, who built a grist and paper mill here in the 1880's.

The Great Allegheny Passage is a 147-mile hike/bike trail that connects the C&O Canal Towpath in Cumberland, Maryland and will soon connect the Point in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Markleton is at Milepost 50.
