The church of St Peter and St Paul started in the 12th century as a stone church with a simple nave and a small chancel. About 1200 North and South aisles were added and the chancel enlarged. The South chapel, South porch and West tower were added in the 15th century. Restoration occurred in 1861, when the North aisle was rebuilt and the North vestry and organ chamber were added.

The church is built of flint rubble with stone dressings. The church consists of chancel, nave, South chapel, North and South aisles, South porch and West tower of three stages and leaded spire. A major feature of the church is the capitals of the pillars in the nave and arcades, of mixed early English and Romanesque styles. The capitals date to late 12th century.
