Above the customer counters in the Enid post office is a mural depicting the Cherokee Outlet Land Run of 1893 which brought settlement to the Enid area. This mural is estimated to be over fifty feet long. It shows several pioneers on horseback in full gallop and at the center, a buggy driven by a man who is hell-bent on laying claim to a piece of land for his family.
The mural is thought to be painted as part of the WPA program in the 1930s, however, this could not be confirmed. The following excerpt from an article clarifies the WPA art projects.
"Often mistaken for WPA art, post office murals were actually executed by artists working for the Section of Fine Arts. Commonly known as "the Section," it was established in 1934 and administered by the Procurement Division of the Treasury Department. Headed by Edward Bruce, a former lawyer, businessman, and artist, the Section's main function was to select art of high quality to decorate public buildings if the funding was available.
