Wat Phra Yuen is one of the major wats in the city of Lamphun and one of the oldest wats in the northern region of Thailand. The evidence as to its precise age is unclear, however, it may date as far back as 1209 BE (666 CE), and was most likely founded by the founder of the city of Lamphun, Queen Chamathewi.

The wat is easily found on the eastern outskirts of the city. The principal feature of the wat is an ancient stupa, found towards the rear of the temple. This stupa contains four standing golden Buddha images on its four sides. Archaeological excavations here have found several cultural stages of construction and re-construction. In addition to the stupa there is an ordination hall, and quarters for the monks, plus an open Buddha shrine area.

During my visit (February 2012) there was reconstruction work ongoing at the temple. Entry is free and unrestricted (the monks will be happy to see you).
