The Palace of the Counts of Almada, also known as Palace of Independence, was declared as a National Monument on June 23th, 1910.

The Palace was founded by D. Fernando de Almada, in 1467, and over the time it undergone several campaigns works, which were successively changing the primitive traces, being visible only four doors and two chimneys of the original configuration.
It was there, in his house, that D. Antão de Almada and the 40 Conjurados had the last meeting that led to the Restoration of Independence of Portugal, on December 1, 1640, with the overturning of the Philippine domain and the acclamation of King D. João IV.
When the family ceased to inhabit it, in 1933, the building was leased to Almeida Garrett.
Years later, after the property had been expropriated by the state in 1940, passed to the administrative supervision of the Sociedade Histórica da Independência de Portugal (SHIP). This was already installed there since 1861, under the direction of Feliciano de Moura Andrade, among many patriots who founded it, with the support of the Count of Almada.
