The first fortification of Serpa was Islamic, prior to the conquest of to the Moors, the village in 1166. The major renovation of the wall was ordered by King D. Dinis, from 1295, in works that took place alongside the reconstruction of the castle and other, similar in every way, held in the castle and defense line of the town of Moura.
Today there are many openings in the walls, but the original entries were only three, the Gate of Beja, located to the northwest, the northeast Gate of Moura, and in the south, the Gate of Seville. The first two entries are ostentatious, between turrets, while the Seville port no longer exists. It was later opened the gates of Corredoura and New Gate.
