Podgill viaduct was built to carry the South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway over Stainmore from the coke producing area of Durham to the iron ore smelting mills of Furness. Initially a single track, the viaduct was built by Chambers & Hilton at a cost of £6,189, widened by building a similar viaduct adjacent and joining them in 1890s. Local limestone stone is used. Note the two different construction methods seen from below.
