Driving through the Matsqui Prairie, where fields stretch wide and the Fraser River meanders through the valley, one might come across a quiet yet striking sight. Standing with a timeless elegance at 5781 Riverside Street is the Matsqui Lutheran Church, a simple yet dignified white clapboard building with a tall spire that reaches toward the sky. It is the kind of place that invites a pause, a moment to take in its quiet presence against the changing landscape around it.
Built in 1904, this little white church on the prairie has stood for over a century, its architecture reflecting the practical yet graceful sensibilities of the Scandinavian settlers who once made their homes here. Before the church was constructed, families gathered for worship in farmhouses, their voices rising in hymns sung in their native tongues. When the Halvorson family donated the land, the congregation built a place of worship that would serve as a permanent fixture in their new community. Today, its clean lines, sharp gabled roof, and soft aging wood tell a story of endurance and faith. The bell tower, standing proudly above the entrance, seems to call out across the prairie, just as it did in its early years when it summoned farmers from their fields and families from their homes.
Time has left its mark on this building, not just in the gentle wear of the wood but in the trials it has endured. The 1948 Fraser River flood nearly swept it away, shifting it from its foundation, but like the people who built it, the church was resilient. It was restored, reinforced, and continued to serve as a place of gathering and worship. Though the congregation has grown smaller over the years, with only about 25 people now attending Sunday services, the church remains a centre of faith. Holy Communion is still celebrated on the first Sunday of each month, and after services, those in attendance gather for coffee, tea, and conversation, carrying on traditions that have spanned generations.
