Old Bark Mill is a large building next to Stock Ghyll in middle of Ambleside. Water wheel still turns and is kept in good repair, but no longer used to produce goods. Merely a tourist attraction.

Building now used as shops. Water wheel is over shot with feeder trough above. Wheel is actually turned for display purposes only, by electric motor.

Nearby plaque on other side of Stock Ghyll, explains that mill was used for wood turning. see gallery.

"first mill was established in 1335; the last in 1793. Much later, from local coppiced wood, these mills crushed bark to make tannin for the curing of skins and produced millions of bobbins for the Lancashire cotton industry."

Very scenic. Have a browse through mill shops, no two floors are on same level.
Current Status: Still In Use

Current Use: Retail shops
