One of the fun things about NCAA Division III football is that the stadiums are small and close to the action. There is more of a family atmosphere knowing that the football players are playing because they want to play since they do not receive athletic scholarships. Although Huntindon College traces its history back to 1854, the football team played its first game in 2003 at a local high school stadium while a permanent home was being built on land purchased near the campus. Although the first game was played there in 2004, W. James Samford Jr. Stadium was dedicated in 2006, and was named in memory of a long-time Montgomery resident. In 2011, the stadium was updated and expanded with prescription turf and visiting team bleachers.
The first game in the new stadium was on October 2, 2004, against Thomas More College, which the Hawks lost in overtime. We were there and enjoyed the excitement that everyone felt at the first game. The first victory at the stadium came one week later, October 9th, with a win over Southwestern Assemblies of God University.
The field is named after Charles Lee, a Huntingdon graduate who dedicated many years to coaching high school football.
