This theatre started on this site in 1953 with a performance of Shakespeare's Richard III directed by Tyrone Guthrie and starring Sir Alec Guiness (Obi Wan Kenobe of Star Wars). The theatre was original a canvas tent erected on this site and the current theatre was built to resemble that tent. It has a unique thrust stage that closely resembles the stage used in Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. This is Canada's pre-eminent theatrical company and over the year's has attracted actors such as Maggie Smit, Nehemiah Persoff, Peter Ustinov, Brian Bedford and William Hutt. It has been considered one of the major Shakespearean companies in the world.
