Court Square in Springfield is the heart of the historic, cultural, civic, and entertainment district in Springfield. There are many historical markers and sites. One of the most interesting is this rescued bell prominently displayed outside the City Hall Building.
Springfield's first City Hall was destroyed by fire in 1905. According to Springfield lore, a monkey overturned a kerosene lamp at a City Hall fair and started the fire. This bell was salvaged from the fire and is now mounted on a granite base for all to see.
The bell is inscribed on the front:
Meenleys' West Troy N.Y.
CITY HALL
Springfield, Mass.
Jan. 1st 1856
The back has the Latin phrase:
HOMO! ECCE HORAE
PROCLAMO TIBI.
SIC TRANSIT GLORIA VITAE
(My translation)
Man! behold the hour
calling to you.
Thus passes the glory of life.
