The Sun is classified as a yellow dwarf star because its visible radiation is most intense in the yellow-green portion of the spectrum.

It has a diameter of about 1,392,000 km, which is about 109 times that of Earth, and its mass is about 2×1030kilograms, 330,000 times that of Earth. It has within it about 99.86% of all the mass in the Solar System.

At one time it was thought that compared to other stars it was relatively insignificant, but it is now believed that it is brighter than 85% of all the stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. It has a surface temperature of about 5505 degrees centigrade. At its equator the solar rotation period is 24.47 days.

The mean distance of the Sun from the Earth is approximately 149.6 million kilometres. At this average distance, light travels from the Sun to Earth in about 8 minutes and 19 seconds. The energy of this sunlight supports almost all life on Earth by photosynthesis and drives Earth's climate and weather.
