This 1688 sculpture entitled "Papirius et sa Mere" or "Papirius and his Mother" depicts an apparent teenage boy standing and looking up at a woman. He is barechested and has a robe hanging over one shoulder and covering his waist. She wears a full length toga. The woman reaches out and holds the boy's right arm with her left hand.
I couldn't determine through research whether Papirius was a real person or fictional. Wikipedia has several Papirius listings...but none seem to be this character. This website (
visit link) indicates that the story of Papirius is that his father brought him to a session of the Roman Senate...proceedings of which are to be kept secret. Papirius, however, revealed to his mother that the Senate was debating whether to permit men to have more than one wife... creating some turbulent times.
The artists of the sculpture are Martin Carlier, Michel Monier & Benoit Massou.
