Die historische Dampflok pfeift und der ICE rast vorbei. Eine Zahnradbahn schraubt sich zum Bergbahnhof hoch und ein Güterzug fährt in den Rangierbahnhof ein. Alles funktioniert wie beim großen Original und ist doch 87 mal kleiner als in Wirklichkeit.
Ein Spielzeug im Museum? Die Werkstätten des Deutschen Museums haben eine Szenerie gebaut, die eben kein Spielzeug ist. Hier wird vorgeführt, wie alles zusammenhängt und ineinander greift. Ob Haupt-, Berg-, Kopf-, Kreuzungs-, Ausweich-, Rangier- und Schattenbahnhof – alles ist vorhanden und funktioniert wie beim Original.
Im Hauptbahnhof für Personen und Güterverkehr beginnen alle Zugfahrten. Die Streckenführung ist auf drei Ebenen angelegt. Ein Computer überwacht und steuert den gesamten Verkehr auf der Anlage. Über insgesamt 260 Lichtschranken verfolgt er alle Züge und führt sie den Fahrplänen gemäß durch das Gleisnetz. Sie können die Fahrt der Züge genau verfolgen. Das Gleisnetz wird an die Wand oberhalb der Anlage projiziert. Erleben Sie die Fahrt aus Sicht des Lokführers! Auf einer Lokomotive ist eine Kamera eingebaut, deren Aufnahmen gezeigt werden.

Vorführung
Dreimal täglich, um 11, 14 und 16 Uhr, wird die Anlage fachkundig vorgeführt. Eine Vorführung dauert 20 Minuten. Dabei wird erklärt, was auf der Modelleisenbahn abläuft. Wie klingt eine Zahnradbahn? Wann fuhr die letzte Dampflok in Ostdeutschland? Sie erfahren Interessantes aus der Geschichte der Eisenbahn. Echte Eisenbahngeräusche werden eingespielt.
Nach der Vorführung bleibt genug Zeit, Fragen zu stellen, sich allein umzusehen und die liebevollen Details der Anlage zu betrachten.
