Traveling North out of Anadarko on Highway 281, you will come to the headquarters of the Wichita Affiliated Tribes. Housed in a one-story stucco building, the Wichita Tribal Cultural and Administration Building is home to the Administrative offices for the Tribal President, Administrator, finance office, programs offices, records, tag office, enrollment, employment, transportation and maintenance, as well as a Tribal gift shop.

The Wichita Reservation was established in 1872. Today it includes the north half of Caddo County, plus parts of Grady, Canadian, Blaine, Custer and Washita Counties. During the latter part of the 1800s, the Wichitas were moved to various locations, and this was a time of much strife and deprivation for the tribe, and the loss of many members. Then, in 1900, the reservation was divided into allotments of 160 acres, with the remaining "surplus lands" becoming open to settlement. A full history of the Tribe can be found here (visit link)

As a result of the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 and the Oklahoma Welfare Act of 1935, the tribal government was organized under a President and Executive Committee, elected by enrolled tribe members for a term of four years. The Affiliated Tribes are the Wichita, Waco, Tawakonie and Keechi Tribes.

The tribe makes many efforts to maintain its identity and its links with the past. Through family and community gatherings, where memories are shared and their history is passed along to the younger generations, this link with the past is enriched. Dances and cultural events keep the traditions alive, and Wichita language classes are conducted. In front of the main building stands a granite monument commemorating the tribal members who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The tribe has joined with the Caddo and Delaware tribes to form WCD Enterprises, which promotes business development within the tribes. As a result, a western hat factory has been established.
