On a grass area surrounded by modern road signs. Travellers had a choice to go to important markets. Both routes lead to the turnpike, now A590. This road was never turnpiked. The information may have been for visitors to Cartmel Priory.
The stone mason may have been illiterate, as the S of Hawkshead is reversed. Further Ss are slightly detached from their word.
