The race had two phases. The first stage went from La Rochelle (France) to Funchal (Madeira, Portugal), total length of 1100 nautical miles. The second phase followed the first and is threefold. It went from Funchal (Madeira, Portugal) to Salvador de Bahia (Brazil), a total of 3100 nautical miles.
