Architects Paley and Austin operated at the start of 20th century and soon developed a reputation for churches. This mission was built from brick as this would be easier to transport and handle. This mission church was built in 1894, which means that the railway would have reached Lancaster, bringing modern fixtures for the architects. To reach Sunderland Point nowadays, there is a tidal road, covered for several hours at High Water. When the church was erected, materials may have been brought by boat on the River Lune as Sunderland Point was a busy port until the railway took all the trade. Handling bricks on and off horse drawn carts would have been far easier than stone.
