Am Sonntag, den 23. Oktober 1977 fuhr ein DGEG-Sonderzug von Rheine über Salzbergen, Lingen (Ems), Meppen nach Emden und zurück mit Dampfloks. Viele Eisenbahnfreunde und Fotografen wohnten dieser Fahrt bei. Es war die letzte Fahrt von DB-Dampflokomotiven des Einsatzbestands über die gesamte Emslandstrecke. Eingesetzt wurden 042 113-4, eine auf Ölfeuerung umgebaute Maschine der Baureihe 41, und die ebenfalls mit Öl geheizte 043 196-5, die zur Baureihe 44 zählt. Die 043 wurde danach im Bahnbetriebswerk Rheine einsatzbereit vorgehalten, ohne jedoch weitere Zugleistungen zu erbringen.
Am Mittwoch, den 26. Oktober 1977 fanden die letzten von DB-Dampfloks geführten Zugfahrten statt: Zusammen mit einer Diesellokomotive der Baureihe 290 beförderte die Lok 043 315-1 nachmittags einen Übergabegüterzug aus dem Emder Hafen in den Rangierbahnhof Emden. Etwa gleichzeitig überführte die 043 903-4 als letzter DB-Dampfzug einen Hilfszugwagen von Oldersum nach Emden. Gegen 16 Uhr wurden beide Maschinen im Bw Emden abgestellt.

On Sunday, 10/23/1977, a special DGEG train drove from Rheine, throuhg Salzbergen, Lingen (Ems) and Meppen to Emden and back pulled entirely by Steam Engines. Many railroad enthusiasts and photogrpahers watched this historic event. It was the last journey of steam engines in normal use for the Deutsche Bahn. The last engine stationed at the main railway station in Emden, was the steam engine 043 903-4 (ex 44 903), which can now be visited at its final location, in front of the railroad station in Emden, where it was moved to on October 26, 1977.
