If a problem exists - create a solution! The Port of Gloucester Docks has railway tracks running along side the wharves and warehouses but the trains and trucks had to negotiate tight, 90° turns to turn from one wharf on to another. The solution was to build mini turntables so that the train and trucks could be moved around the corners one unit at a time. It does seem strange seeing the rails meeting at 90°.

The local museum has placed a notice on one of the turntables that reads:
"Quayside Rail Lines & Turntables / There was a network of rail lines around the / docks & the turbtables were needed to make / sharp turns around the warehouses."

The turntables, made of wood, are about 4 metres (13 feet) in diameter. The locking mechanisms and turning was probably carried out by manual labour as there is no indication of any power being used.
