The Sunken Gardens was part of the City Beautiful Movement (
visit link) championed in Denver by Mayor Speer. The Sunken Gardens were filled in in the 1930s due to the polio scare. This information came from the Sunken Gardens plaque. Sadly, the plaque has been vandalized is some parts are obscured.
