The statues were gifted to the City of London in 2005 by the President of Italy during a State visit. The two statues are identical and are based on a work created in 1924 by Cambellotti. (visit link)

The statues show a rider on horseback and, with the rider's cape and horses tail trailing backwards, indicates they are traveling at speed.

The Lord Mayor of London thanked the Italian President, in a speech, where he says:
"Mr President, Your Royal Highnesses, Your Excellencies, My Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen. May I begin by thanking you, Mr President, and the Italian people for the two magnificent statues of Cambellotti herdsmen on horseback. We pay a great deal of attention to making our streets and parks beautiful and your gift will grace our Thames Walkway, making it even more popular." (visit link)
