Originally, this organization was set up as a preservation effort but their mission has changed to protecting the cultural history of Middletown and creating historical awareness, specifically w/ regards to the Civil War. This museum is a result.

This museum is one of the official Maryland Civil War Trails sponsored sites as well as one of the sites promoted by the town's tourism initiative. The tour and to just look around inside this well-preserved house is free. I saw the museum when I was given a sudden and impromptu tour by Jerry, a nice fellow who had engaged me in conversation. I had no clue the house was a museum. The outside is marked by two separate designations, it is stop number 1 on the battlefield tour and stop number 2 on the Maryland Civil War Trails tour. Lots going on here.

First, there is a small room just inside the entrance, off to the right which has some wonderful Civil War items on display and exhibited on tables and in glass cabinets. They are open Monday thru Friday 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.(301) 371-7090. Upstairs is a field hospital operating room which is preserved or at least presented in the most authentic manner to show what life was like back in 1862 during the Battle of South Mountain. Down the hall was a mid 19th century recuperating room. I was told it was a representation of a field hospital but another source says early 1900s.

I found the following on their site:

Explore Dr. Lamar's Sanitarium and see his original operating room, equipment, books and medicines dating back to the early 1900's. Civil War memorabilia is on display and the public can use a codigraph machine that accesses old Valley Register newspapers dating back to the 1800's. The Lamar Center is located at 200 West Main Street, Middletown, MD 21769. Call 301-371-7090 for more information and hours of operation. SOURCE

The town website is located HERE. At the top of the page is a link (second link, top left) for tourism which will bring you HERE. Scroll down a little bit and you will see the town's narrative for this historic site (it is the third official attraction).

The town has another separate link for this place which actually doubles as the attraction's own link. Confusing, but, there it is. That link is HERE
