Historie zacala v roce 1859 prestehoval hrabe z Valdštejna malou strojírnu a železárnu. Pracoval v ní i zkušený inženýr Emil Škoda. Ten navrhuje rozsáhlé investice a rozšížení firmy, to se hrabeti nelíbí a továrnu prodává Emilu Škodovi.
Ten podnik rozširuje, zakládá nové provozy, prináší pokrokové technologie a modení zpusoby výroby.
Továrna se orientuje na výrobu zbraní, stává se jedním z nejvetších výrobcu v Evrope. V roce 1899 je podnik preveden na akciovou spolecnost, v roce 1900 rytír Emil Škoda umírá.
Podnik vyrábí ocelové odlitky pro lode, zbrane pro pripravovanou WW I. Po válce ale není pro zbrane odbyt, tak musí prejít na novpu výrobu - parní a elektrické lokomotivy, potreby pro potravinárský prumysl, zemedelství, atd.
Škoda se stává nejvetším a nejduležitejším podnikem v zemi. Do koncernu patrí celá rada podniku po celé zemi, vcetne podniku Laurin a Klement v Mladé Boleslavi, dneska automobilku Škoda Auto.
Behem WW II opet vyrábí zbrane, tentokrát pro nemeckou rísi, která okupuje Ceskoslovensko.
Po válce se orientuje na težkou prumysl, ostatní výroba zustává v podnicích v jiných mestech.
Po roce 1990 je rada cástí odprodána, pricházejí nový investori ale celosvetová znacka Škoda žije.
