The militia of the Revolutionary and Civil War trained and "paraded" on the village common. It was a professional, cultural, and trade center. Local citizens founded a private academy in 1798. It was the birthplace of General Benjamin F. Butler (1818), distinguished military officer, Massachusetts Governor, and U.S. Senator."
