The City-
The city of Titusville was born in 1796 after Jonathan Titus and his Uncle Samuel Kerr settled in the area. Lumber was the main product to come from the area till Col. Edwin L. Drake struck oil along Oil Creek just outside of town. After the rush slowed down the lumber industry again rose to the top until the steel industries sprang up. Along with steel, oil, and lumber the city also was home to one of the first makers of the world famous "Hula hoop".
As of 2010 the city is home to approximately 5600 people, a number that seems set to drop as many of the local businesses close or move to the warmer temperatures of the southern states or perhaps to foreign countries.
Even though Titusville has a Mayor it is mostly a figurehead position as the city is actually run be a City Council and a City Manager.
The Person -
Jonathan Titus was born May 27, 1772 near Frankstown in Blair County, Pennsylvania. While performing his duties with the Holland Land Company Titus and his Uncle Samuel Kerr found themselves in the valley that at first sight they knew would be their home some day.
Some twenty years after posting their claims to the land the two men finally began building the town that would later be the birth place of the modern oil age.
After moving to the area Titus along with Samual Kerr started planing the new community of "Edinburg". Even though the founders wanted to call their new town "Edinburg" the popularity of Titus had the locals saying that the name should be "Titusville" and after some debate the numbers won out and "Titusville" was born.
