In 1945, the U.S. Marine Corps was presented with the Academy Award for With the Marines at Tarawa as best documentary, short subject. This 20-minute film provided footage of the battle between the Marines and the Japanese for control of the Pacific island of Tarawa on November 20-22, 1943. It was filmed by combat photographers of the 2nd Marine Division and released by order of President Franklin Roosevelt. Americans were shocked by its graphic nature.

The Oscar is on display in the World War II gallery of the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, VA. The coordinates point to the entrance of the museum.
