In 1866, the Confederate CemeteryClick for related waymark to open in new window was established in Spotsylvania, Virginia by the Spotsylvania Memorial Association, a group of local women, to reinter the Confederate soldiers who had been buried scattered across the area's battlefields during the Civil War. The Confederate graves were organized in groups according to state, including an unknown section for the fallen who were unidentified.

Interestingly, in the Tennessee section, there are three headstones for Union soldiers from Maine, although only one was killed in the area.

OTIS E LUFKIN
PVT CO A 1 MAINE CAV
CIVIL WAR
1841 1865

Otis was killed in action at Dinwiddie Court House, VA.

LOREN LUFKIN
PVT CO C 16 MAINE INF
CIVIL WAR
1835 1864

Loren was killed during the battle of Spotsylvania Court House, the only one to die in the vicinity.

SAMUEL E LUFKIN
PVT CO I
5 MAINE INF

1827
1862

Samuel was killed in action at Crampton's Gap, MD.

Although it is surmised that the remains of the three brothers are actually not buried here, they are marked with standard gravestones and are not memorials. The three headstones for the Union soldiers definitely stand out of place among the 700+ Confederate headstones.
