Town leaders built the Engine House in response to a growing population and concerns raised by the Chicago Fire of 1871. The first floor, which houses fire fighting displays, has two equipment bays. The building served until 1969 when a new station was built. The local historical society gained a home here in 1982. In 1992, the Skokie Park District became the title holder and restored the building.

The building consists of two floors. The first floor has a reference library for public use and in-house exhibit space. The second floor is an open space appropriate for school group programs, private rentals, meetings, and traveling exhibits.
