The Nag's Head is much abused and it is not unknown for sign writers to portray an old woman on the sign.

However, here we have a horses head. A nag was a pony or small horse let out for hire. It was not unusual then, for The Nag's Head to appear in places like tis one, in a central city location. This one is not portrayed wearing a bridle and is said to have been a picture of a circus pony at one time.
