To show his gratitude to the veterans of West Milford, Andrew led Troop 114 scouts in building 10 benches for Veterans Park in the center of town. His goal was to make Veterans Park a more suitable environment to relax and a way to remember the soldiers that had given their lives for our freedom. Donations for the benches were solicited through an article in the local newspaper as well as Our Lady Queen of Peace Church bulletin. The benches are built with 2X4 Douglas fir pine and galvanized hardware. Each has 4 coats of Cabot Gloss Spar varnish. Each bench has a plaque which was mortised into the top of the bench that includes the names of the honored veterans and their service branch and date of service. The veterans honored had served during WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and both Gulf Wars. The benches have a 4" cement slab under each bench so that the town workers do not need to mow underneath and to allow the benches to be bolted down. The volunteers on the project dug 10 openings approximately 60"X24"X8". The openings were first filled with aggregate (crushed used stone, gravel and cement) that was left in the parking lot by the DPW for our use.

There was a total of over 374 hours in the planning and executing of Andrew’s project. He is extremely thankful to all the scouts, leaders, parents and volunteers who have helped him in completing my Eagle Project. He was very grateful and appreciative of a donation of cement by John Vitale of Northeast Concrete through the help of Sean Rice of Rice Company, LLC. He is also grateful for advice and support from: Kevin Boyle, Township Administrator; Richard Mc Fadden, Township Engineer; Jerry Storms, Dept. of Public Works; Karl Dankworth, VFW; and Ada Eric for suggesting the project.
